In general, most video conferences are set to use encryption where possible.  If during the set up of the call, the devices are unable to use encryption, the meeting will proceed without it.  On most systems, the level of encryption is shown on-screen with a closed padlock showing the encryption is on and an open padlock showing the encryption is off.

By having encryption off, it is possible that a hacker with access to the network and with the appropriate tools could intercept the video traffic.

While this risk is very low within the NHS network, calls to external partners via an internet connection are more vulnerable.  In these cases, consideration should be given to setting encryption to on and allowing the meeting to fail if encryption is not available.

New systems being established to support care homes and patients in their own home will have encryption on by default meaning it will not be possible to set up an unencrypted call. This is also true for browser-using participants when in calls to our browser-enabled bridges, whether on NHS networked connections or internet connections.
